Charles Lynn Washburn

His laughter, labor, faith, and stories will linger on—roots woven into the very fabric of his family and community.

Charles Lynn Washburn, lovingly known by many as “Cutworm,” a nickname bestowed upon him by his dear friend Gene Fox, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026, at the age of 88. His remarkable journey began on December 6, 1937, and from that day forward, Lynn brought warmth, laughter, and dedication to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Lynn’s roots ran deep in Alabama where he built a legacy of hard work and generosity. For over 52 years, he owned and operated the Washburn Fruit Stand in Nectar, a beloved fixture in the community that reflected his passion for people and the land. Whether it was a fresh basket of peaches, produce from his garden, or a neighbor in need, Lynn always found a way to offer something meaningful and memorable. Customers often stayed awhile longer, drawn by his knack for conversation and his remarkable love of storytelling.

He worked for Major Gas Company as well, earning respect not just for his reliability but for his warmth. Lynn loved the small joys that peppered life: long days fishing beneath the Alabama sun, tending to his garden, or spending time picking peaches, activities that kept his spirit closely tied to the earth he cherished.

Faith was a guiding light for Lynn, and he was a charter member of Sweet Home Baptist Church in Gallant, where he found fellowship, purpose, and lifelong friends. Few things brightened his week like going to church; it was sacred time, full of gratitude and community. His devotion rippled through the generations, inspiring those around him to lead with compassion and conviction.

Lynn had a zest for adventure and loved getting away to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee, especially to the Log Cabin Pancake House in Gatlinburg. The trips brought laughter, great food, and precious memories. He relished opportunities to go out to eat anywhere, delighting in the company and the stories that would unfold around the table. At home, gathering with loved ones over a playful hand of Rook or retelling a favorite joke brought joy to every occasion.

Lynn’s family was the center of his universe—a constant source of pride, strength, and comfort. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy Washburn, and his loving daughters, Sonya Denise Washburn, Carol Lynn Neal (Robert Robbins). His legacy continues in his grandchildren, Alex Peete (Samantha) and Rachel Rikard (Jon), and his great-grandchild, Aya Lockhart, each a testament to the values and love Charles bestowed upon his family. He is also fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.

While Lynn’s passing leaves an aching void, he joins many loved ones who went before him: his first wife, Carolyn Huffstutler Washburn; his beloved son, Wendell Kent Washburn; his father, J.D. Washburn; his mother, Dorothy Lorene Dutton; his stepmother, Frances Marsh Washburn; siblings Tommy Washburn, Jimmy Washburn, and Ann Whaley; and dear friends Leon Gargus and Gene Fox. Their reunion in memory brings comfort to those still here, knowing he is embraced by those who shaped his life.

To celebrate this treasured life, visitation will be held at Sweet Home Baptist Church, 689 Conservation Lake Road, Gallant, AL 35972, on August 16, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at the same location from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. Lynn will be laid to rest at High Rock Cemetery, 260 High Rock Road, Hayden, AL 35079, with burial beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Charles Lynn Washburn leaves an indelible mark upon all who knew and loved him. His laughter, labor, faith, and stories will linger on—roots woven into the very fabric of his family and community. While we mourn his loss, we are grateful for the years we shared, the wisdom he offered, and the love that will echo for generations.
