Kristopher Gene Updike

Kristopher Gene Updike, lovingly known to many as “Smiley,” passed away on July 18, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, faith, and kindness that will long be remembered by all who knew him. Born on September 11, 1975, Kristopher’s life was a portrait of devotion—to his family, his faith, and the many friends he made along the way.

Above all, Kristopher cherished his role as a father. His children—Ethan Cruell, Landon Updike, Maci Updike, Samuel Updike, Nadia Barrani, and Daniel Barrani—were the pride of his life. He reveled in their accomplishments, supported them in times of need, and filled their days with laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love. Kristopher’s radiant smile, the very source of his deserved nickname, made every interaction special, especially for his dear granddaughter, Kaezlyn Corbett, whose own smile was a reflection of his legacy.

Kristopher was a devoted son to his father, Larry Updike, and his mother, Brenda Brown, whose values and love shaped him into the man he became. His siblings—Patrice Hendricks, Larry Jerome Updike, and Amanda Sturgis—remember him as a brother whose gentle spirit, good humor, and unwavering support brightened even the most ordinary days. He was also a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews, always ready with an encouraging word, a helping hand, and a contagious grin.

Friends and family alike delighted in Kristopher’s vibrant personality. He truly loved people and had an undeniable gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. His life was a celebration of community—he found joy in gatherings, shared his laughter freely, and built bridges wherever he went. A true fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Kristopher brought an infectious enthusiasm to every game, rallying those around him with cheers and song. Singing was a passion that stirred his soul, and his voice—joyful and sincere—will echo in the memories of all who heard it.

Kristopher’s faith was a cornerstone of his existence; he found profound comfort and purpose in his relationship with the Lord. This faith not only sustained him through life’s trials but inspired those who walked beside him. He was happiest rooted in simple pleasures: tending to his garden, nurturing each plant with patience and care, and celebrating the beauty in everyday life.

Though Kristopher now joins his beloved wife Anita Updike in eternal rest, his spirit endures in the hearts of all who loved him. He has left an indelible mark—one of kindness, joy, and steadfast love.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked to make donations to The Cleveland Funeral Home for funeral expenses.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in his honor on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. at Grace Community Baptist Church. Family and friends are invited to come together in remembrance, to share stories, to sing his favorite songs, and to celebrate the wonderful life of Kristopher Gene Updike—a man who made the world brighter simply by being in it.
