Michael Smith, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, United States Marine Corps veteran, and beloved member of the Cleveland community, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, at the age of 67.
Born on December 7, 1958, Michael lived a life defined by love, dedication, and selflessness. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, an experience that shaped his character and commitment to his country and family. Beyond his military service, Michael was a man of many passions and talents. An accomplished airplane mechanic, he had a remarkable ability to identify and describe every plane soaring overhead, a testament to his deep love for aviation. His fascination with airplanes extended to avidly watching documentaries, always eager to learn more about the machines that captured his heart.
Family was the cornerstone of Michael’s life. Above all else, he treasured his wife of 45 years, Donna, whose partnership was a source of strength and joy. Michael was a devoted father to his son, Zac (Brandi), and daughter, Kali Thompson (Shawn), and a proud, loving grandfather to Annelia Thompson, Max Thompson, Avery Smith, Tilly Thompson, and Flynn Thompson. His home was filled with warmth, laughter, and the presence of his beloved dogs, who shared his enthusiasm for life. Michael’s caring nature extended to his extended family, including Faye Bariola (David) and Tim Nichols (Melissa), and his cherished friends Ricky Busby and David Gillham, who were constant sources of companionship and support.
A passionate and skilled handyman, Michael brought a unique touch to every project he undertook, often fixing or improving things before they even needed attention. His cooking was a joy to many, reflecting his generous spirit and love for gathering loved ones around the table. Once an avid fisherman, his fondness for the outdoors never waned. Ever a coffee enthusiast and a faithful Christian man, Michael embodied kindness, generosity, and grace in all aspects of his life.
Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Margie Busby, and his mother-in-law, Faye McHaney (Dave), whose memories he cherished deeply.
A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Michael’s remarkable journey on April 11, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Cleveland Funeral Home. This gathering will reflect the spirit of a man who gave so much to those around him.
Michael Smith’s legacy is one of unwavering love and selfless service—a reminder of the profound impact one life can have on many. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him.
