Norman Julius
Hartwig
August 10, 1958 – December 26, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Norman Julius Hartwig, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world peacefully on December 26, 2024, at the age of 66. Born on August 10, 1958, in Flint, Michigan, Norman lived a life full of love, dedication, and joy, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.
Norman was the cherished son of Clarence Edward Otto Hartwig and Norma Faye (Barnett) Herron. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Clarence Hartwig and Gay Nell Hartwig , his brother Alton Hartwig, and his dear son, Billy Joe Hartwig. Their memories will forever be a part of the fabric of his life.
For 32 wonderful years, Norman was devoted to his wife, Cheryl Hartwig, who stood by his side through thick and thin, sharing a partnership built on love, respect, and mutual support. Together, they raised a beautiful family that includes their son, Shane Allen Bailey (Julie), and daughters Stephanie Dawn Lucius (Joe), Nancy Jo Hensley (Scotty), Tonya Michelle Hartwig, Karen Cox Smith (Jason), and Amber Marie Martin (Kyler O'Steen). He was proud of his family and delighted in the company of his 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life.
Norman's spirit lives on in his surviving siblings: brothers Gary Wayne Hartwig (Kay) and Robert James Hartwig (Nadine), and sister Cathy Magers. He also leaves behind his step-siblings Gene Marsh (Shelia), Jim Marsh (Rose), Joyce Sedlmayr (Ken), and JoAnn Castles, all of whom were integral parts of his life. His family circle extended far beyond immediate relatives, encompassing numerous other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
A proud veteran, Norman served his country honorably in the Air Force for over four years. His commitment to serving others was a guiding principle in his life. After his military service, he worked as a machinist at Steward Machine for approximately 30 years, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues for his skill and work ethic.
Norman had a myriad of hobbies and interests that enriched his life. He found joy in building model airplanes, nurturing his garden, and exploring the great outdoors through hiking in the mountains. A passionate reader, he cherished the stories that transported him to different worlds. Above all, Norman's greatest love was his family; he relished every moment spent with them, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
A celebration of Norman's life will be held on Saturday, February 01, 2025 at 2:00 pm in the Blount County/Cleveland Funeral Home Chapel, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Samaritan's Purse, a charity he held dear, at P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607.
