William J. Johnson, born on October 31, 1938, in Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, in Birmingham, AL. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him.
William’s life was rooted in hard work and dedication. As a skilled carpenter, he built more than just structures; he built a legacy of love, integrity, and commitment that inspires his family and friends to this day. His proudest accomplishments were not marked by medals or ribbons but by the example he set — teaching those around him the true meaning of loving family, working diligently, and cherishing life’s blessings.
An avid outdoorsman, William found joy in fishing, hunting, tending his yard, and collecting tools—simple pleasures that reflected his grounded nature. Yet beyond these interests, his greatest passion was his family and the treasured moments shared together.
The many wonderful adventures William shared with his beloved spouse, Barbara B. Johnson and family, are cherished. Their travels spanned remarkable places such as Alaska, Hawaii, California, Niagara Falls, Quebec, New York City, Washington DC, and the Great Smoky Mountains. But no matter the destination, William always believed that it was never truly about where they went—it was about simply being together.
William is survived by his loving wife, Barbara B. Johnson; his daughter, Suzanne Johnson (Vincent) Quick; and his son, Barry (Andrea) Johnson. He was a proud grandfather to Eric (Chloe) Quick, Alex (Olivia) Quick, Marlana (Nelson) Graham, and Shay (Dex) Sullivan, and great-grandfather to Echo Quick; Kabri, Nora, and Eliza Graham; Wells, Sophie, Forrest and Walker Sullivan. Also dear to him was his nephew, Bryan Faulkner, who was like a son. William’s sisters, Shirley Teal and Rita Weems, along with sisters-in-law Brenda (Charles) Faulkner, Kathy (Billy Joe) Cook, and Laverne Ayers, whom he loved as sisters, remain part of his enduring family circle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie William Johnson and Sibyl Ellis Johnson, as well as his baby sister, Barbara Ann Johnson.
The family and friends of William J. Johnson hold close the memories, laughter, and stories shared over the years. They take comfort in knowing that his journey in this life is complete and find faith in where he now rests. His legacy lives on vividly, not only through his descendants but in the hearts of everyone whose life was touched by his kindness and steadfast spirit.
Visitation and funeral services will be held on June 12, 2026, at the Cleveland Funeral Home, located at 17885 State Highway 160, Cleveland, AL 35049. The visitation begins at 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Mt Joy Cemetery in Cleveland, starting at 3:00 p.m.
It is hard to say good-bye to an extraordinary man who was so much more than a carpenter—an amazing husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. William J. Johnson’s life was a testament to love and resilience, and those who loved him will forever carry his spirit in their hearts.
